Falling Light at Leeds Corn Exchange (Leeds International Festival)

An immersive art installation created by design studio Flat-e with original music by electronic musician Daniel Avery.

Falling Light is a piece of architecture that comes alive, an illuminated space for people to experience original music. The focus of the work is a translucent horizontal screen floating above, inviting the viewer to gaze upwards and contemplate the idea of light emerging from darkness. It’s a unique spectacle that places the audience within the performance as light falls onto their bodies, making them part of the work.

On May 2nd, Daniel Avery will present his original music in person to open the installation to the public. Tickets are available for this event. For the remainder of the festival, Falling Light will be open to the public and free of charge.

Set within the iconic Leeds Corn Exchange, the work blurs the boundaries between music and art installation. Entering the Corn Exchange after dark, all that will be visible of the installation is the flickering of projected light in the void above the screen. Descending the stairs to the lower ground floor, the audience emerges into the space below to be bathed in light and sound. Falling Light will feel like stepping inside the music and touching the light.

Flat-e’s ongoing collaboration with Daniel Avery has seen them create experimental animated works for his Song For Alpha album and the surrounding shows. This partnership has proved to be a fertile creative environment for each artist, pushing their work in interesting new directions. Falling Light emerged as a desire to create an immersive large scale artwork not only for fans of electronic music but also for a wider audience outside of nightclub culture.

Live Sessions at Leeds Corn Exchange // Marimba One

marimba.jpg

We always like to try new things at Leeds Corn Exchange. That said we welcome Mike Cunningham to perform with his Marimba.

This will be a short informal concert repeated a few times throughout the day and is an opportunity for everyone to experience the sound of the marimba outside of a concert hall and in the grand acoustic setting of the Corn Exchange.

This is a chance to come and ask me about the instrument as well as listening to my performance and if you're feeling particularly generous, a small donation would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be performing some of my own compositions and arrangements as well as some classical percussion repertoire so feel free to drop in any point between during the afternoon.

BBBig Ideas - LeedsBID and Bettakultcha presents Fantastic Plastic

The Final Straw

One day, the final plastic straw will roll off a production line somewhere in the world. It will be one less plastic item in use in our throwaway society. There is now no place left on earth that is not touched by plastic – it’s everywhere.

But that’s because plastic is a wonder product – it has so many practical applications. For example, more and more people are discovering the low maintenance benefits of plastic lawns. But where are these sheets of green plastic going to go once they’ve become faded or torn? Can they be recycled or will bacteria evolve to eat them?

What can we do as individuals in Leeds to reduce plastic use?

Whose responsibility is plastic anyway – the consumer or the manufacturer?

At this event we’ll be discussing Fantastic Plastic – it’s so good we can’t get rid of it.

This event is a must go to if you are wanting to network with other businesses.

DeepHouseYoga

Come along to this Deephouseyoga workshop and you’ll find vinyl DJ, Gabe spinning his magic on the decks and yoga teacher TJ teaching you the poses to put alongside the soulful bass vibes. Beginning with a slow, cool sound from the decks, TJ will demonstrate the basics and safety of each pose. Gradually building up the heat, the vibe and the energy, we will peak in the middle for a few classic tunes and asanas. Slowing it right down, we’ll move closer to our mats for the soulful vibes to take you into the most blissful relaxation. If you love your house music and soul and knock out the odd yoga pose, this vinyl delight of a yoga sesh, is just for you.

Deephouseyoga will have you chilling, moving, stretching and chilling again. Wear whatever makes you smile, move and stretch. Deephouse yogis turn up in gym gear, sports kit or yoga pants. Also bring along your fave, cosy, warm sweater to get snuggly in your savasana. Bring along a yoga mat if you have one, although panic not if you don’t, we have a stash of them.

This Deephouseyoga workshop will cover all the basic teaching points for each yoga pose and is suitable for everyone. If you have never done yoga before, it’s a good session to come along to......you’ll find yourself absorbed by the magic and music.
